Business Problem.
R&L Brosamer's project at
LAX airport, CA, had two major network
connectivity difficulties:

Connecting the concrete batch plant to
the field office complex allows the
computer system at the plant access to
network resources, and allowing
support personnel remote control over
the systems at the plant.

Allowing field personnel on-grade
access to network resources, such as
data servers, document management
database, email, and the likes.

When the computer systems at the plant
required maintenance or troubleshooting,
the entire paving operation is halted.
This costs thousands of dollars each
hour. Being connected and available
online improves preventive maintenance,
remote support, thus reducing downtime.
Once inside
the diligently guarded security fence,
engineers at actual runway and taxiways
construction site had no connectivity to the
network resources. In order to check a
document, or to read an email, an individual
would have to exit the secured area to return
to the office complex then return back, at the
cost of at least 45 minutes each time.The Solution.
Vertos™ is our business wireless
solution to these common problems and
difficulties in the field. Stratos Wireless
designed and implemented a wireless bridge
system to connect the plant and the office
complex with at least 10Mbps connectivity.
This is upgradeable to 50Mbps. The
professional deployment crew worked with the
field personnel to manage and install the
equipment on both ends. This solved the first
issue.
With Stratos Wireless’ extensive expertise in
wireless systems and network technologies, we
implemented a WiFi system using hi-powered
wireless gear to solve the second problem. A
mini base station setup was deployed at the
plant and directed to provide coverage at the
runway construction area. Personnel on the
grade now enjoy full access to the network
resources, including Internet and field
applications, from the convenience of their
laptop and PDAs.
The total
project is estimated to reduce cost and
overhead for R&L Brosamer by up to $150,000.
